Southgate Centre partially evacuated after robbers use "noxious" spray

Suspects who allegedly tried to rob a jewellery store in Southgate Centre deployed a “noxious” spray, and the mall had to be evacuated, police say.

According to an Edmonton Police Service news release, officers came to the mall around 12:30 pm Monday after the substance had been sprayed. Emergency crews evacuated the north side of the mall to have the area ventilated.

Police arrested one man, but two other suspects fled and are still at large.

Police did not give details about what the spray was. A few hours later, a staff person at Southgate’s guest services said the north area of the mall was still cordoned off.

Anyone with information about the robbery or where the other two suspects are is asked to contact EPS at 780-423-4567. You can also contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
