Back on Alberta soil, it didn’t take long for Connor McDavid to be asked about his contract status with the Edmonton Oilers.
McDavid is in Calgary for Hockey Canada’s orientation camp, ahead of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. While talk of the NHL’s return to the Olympics for the first time since 2014 dominated discussion, there had to be a question for McDavid as he enters the final year of his contract with the Oilers.
“Not even a softball Olympic question for me to start, huh?” McDavid joked with TSN’s Ryan Rishaug. “That’s okay. Right into it.”
McDavid has been eligible to sign an extension for nearly two months, but the 28-year-old superstar says he still wants to take things slowly.
“I said at the end of June I had every intention to take my time with it, and I still feel the same way… I have every intention to win in Edmonton. That’s my only focus, maybe next to winning a gold medal with Canada. It is my intention to win there.”

When asked if he prefers to get a contract done before the season begins, presumably to avoid distraction, McDavid said, “All options are on the table.”
“I don’t have a preference either way. I want the group to be as focused and dialled in, and ready to roll come day one, as possible.”
