A free online doctors' office service has been launched in Alberta

Albertans can now chat with a doctor, without risking a visit to their office.

Alberta received a new way to connect with healthcare professionals today as Calgary-based Dr. Husein Moloo announced the launch of PurposeMed, an online-only video-and-voice-call platform that connects patients with doctors remotely.

The service is free of charge and aims to relieve the stress on the healthcare system and the 8-1-1 Healthlink line by allowing doctors both in and out of isolation to connect with patients remotely.

The doctors will assess patients with approved Alberta Health Services protocol, and are all Alberta Medical Association-licensed.

All that’s currently required is an email address and valid Alberta address to join the virtual waiting room. Physicians are available Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.

“Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen the need for the medical community to come together to help support Alberta Health Services beyond our day-to-day work,” said Dr. Moloo, co-founder of PurposeMed, in a press release.

“As the Alberta government continues to encourage social distancing, the need for virtual care will increase. We hope the platform will be helpful to all Albertans, and especially high-risk individuals and residents in rural areas. With the COVID-19 situation changing so quickly, we hope that being able to reach out to a real doctor will help put people at ease and get treatment for affected people more quickly.”
