The Edmonton Oilers’ decision to let Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg walk is continuing to haunt the organization.

The Oilers’ prospect pool is severely lacking given how competitive they’ve been in recent years, which made it quite shocking when they chose not to match the St. Louis Blues’ offer sheets given to Holloway and Broberg after the 2023-24 season.

Not only did the Oilers lose two of their most promising young talents, but both have since blossomed into very impactful NHLers. Holloway has recorded 114 points in 136 games with the Blues and was rewarded with a five-year, $38.75-million extension in May.

Broberg, meanwhile, led all Blues skaters in ice time this past season, averaging 23:21 minutes per game. He was rewarded with a six-year, $48-million contract in January.

Making matters all the worse for Oilers fans is that it appears as though the duo has also quickly become leaders in the dressing room.

The Blues announced their captains ahead of the 2026-27 season on Thursday. While Robert Thomas will take over the captaincy role, both Holloway and Broberg have been named as assistants.

This isn’t a new role for Broberg, as he also wore an “A” during the 2025-26 season in what was just his second year with the organization. It is new for Holloway, however, who is 24 years old.

“Lowkey just starts to hurt more and more as Oilers fans,” one user chimed in on X.

To the Oilers’ credit, they’ve attempted to make up for the loss of Holloway in a series of trades. They’ve brought in the likes of Vasily Podkolzin, Matt Savoie, and Isaac Howard in attempts to add some young NHL-calibre players to their roster.

Both Podkolzin and Savoie have made positive impacts, though the jury is still out on Howard, who spent the vast majority of the 2025-26 season in the AHL.

The Oilers are hoping all three can make big strides in what is another Stanley Cup-or-bust season. While there’s nothing that can be done about it now, having Holloway and Broberg on the roster would have certainly helped them in reaching that goal.
