Former Edmonton Oilers goalie starts new career as a life coach

Jack Campbell announced his retirement from pro hockey in an Instagram video on Sunday.

It ends a 176-game NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings, and Dallas Stars.

The former NHL goalie hasn’t played professional hockey since the 2024-25 season, and hasn’t made an NHL appearance since the 2023-24 campaign. That last NHL appearance came with the Oilers, who subsequently bought him out after 2023-24.

Campbell went on to sign a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings but wound up entering the Player Assistance Program in October of 2024. He played just 14 games in the AHL that season and hasn’t played any sort of professional hockey since.

It was often said during Campbell’s career, specifically with the Oilers and Maple Leafs, that he had a tendency to be far too hard on himself in the crease. The 34-year-old alluded to that somewhat in the video he posted on Sunday.

“Most of you know me as the hockey player. I grew up my entire life chasing one dream, and that was to play in the NHL,” Campbell said. “I was fortunate enough to accomplish that goal of playing eight seasons in the NHL, becoming an NHL All-Star, and frankly, on paper, living a pretty awesome life.

“What a lot of people don’t see is the personal battle that I went through throughout my career. Not having somebody to hold me accountable for having a well-balanced life. That’s when I found, four years ago, my life coach, who’s completely changed everything for me.”

Now, in what is somewhat of a full-circle moment, Campbell is looking to help others out in his new career as an identity and performance coach.

“I have been fortunate to work with some of the world’s best sports psychologists, therapists, life coaches, you name it. That’s why I’m so excited to share what I’ve learned with you guys. In my package we’ll break down how you’re doing, how you’re getting in your own way, what you want to accomplish, and how we get there.”

Campbell made it clear that he was very appreciative of his time in the NHL, but wishes he had gotten help from these types of professionals at a much younger age.
