Former home of the 'Edmonton Journal' hits the market for $4.5 million
The former Edmonton Journal building has been listed for sale, and we’re taking a look back at the evolution of Edmonton’s longest-serving newspaper.
The five-storey building located at 10006 101st St. NW is listed for $4,515,480 and has sat vacant since Journal staff were sent home in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020.
Listed as an investment or owner-user property, the 148,640-square-foot building is being sold as an opportunity for adaptive reuse or redevelopment.
The property hit the market on Aug. 6.

The sale offers a chance to own a piece of the newspaper’s more than 120-year history in Edmonton.
The Journal was founded as the Evening Journal in November 1903 by John Macpherson, John W. Cunningham, and Arthur Moore as a rival to the Edmonton Bulletin, the city’s first newspaper.
The newspaper moved around a few locations in its early years (its first edition was published in the back of a fruit store) before settling into a leased space in 1905 in a one-storey building at 102nd Avenue and 101st Street, on the site where the Tegler Building would later stand and where the Bank of Montreal is now located.
As the newspaper grew, the need for more space became apparent, and the Journal eventually moved in 1921 to its longtime home at 101st Street and 100th Avenue.

The brick building stood for 69 years before being demolished to make way for the building that stands today, which the Journal officially moved into in late 1991. Parts of the old brick building remain part of the facade.

Thirty years later, the building would be vacant.
The Journal remained under the ownership of the Southam family until 1996, when it was acquired by Hollinger International. It was sold to Canwest in 2000 and eventually came under its current ownership, Postmedia Network Inc., in 2010.
