Add another thing to your list of things to do in Edmonton this winter: the massive ice wall has returned, and you can check out a festival and ice climbing competition there next month, too.

The ice wall debuted in 2021 and has become a fixture for winter outdoor enthusiasts in YEG. After spending last winter in the ICE District, the ice wall is back in a brand-new location at Louise McKinney Park.

YEG Snow Ice Fest, as well as the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup, kicks off on February 27 and ends on March 2.

The festival will include a competition viewing area, vendors, a food and drink section, and a variety of “try it” activities where you can test your ice-climbing skills.

If you’re feeling adventurous, the Edmonton ice climbing wall offers the perfect opportunity to give ice climbing a try, complete with equipment rentals and beginner lessons.

Drop-in rates are $20, and a full equipment rental package costs $15 per person.

Intro to Ice Climbing courses are recommended for beginners; they include all rental gear and take 1.5 hours to complete. You can register for the course here.

And hey, if you get the hang of it and enjoy it, maybe you could head out to the Rockies and tackle one of these majestic frozen waterfalls. Life is short, have fun!
