Former Edmonton Oilers winger Corey Perry is on the move once again.

The 40-year-old, who signed a one-year, $2-million deal with the LA Kings in the offseason, has been traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a second-round pick.

This trade is a reunion of sorts for Perry, who spent both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons with the Lightning. That first season saw him and his Lightning teammates reach the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to the Colorado Avalanche in six games.

That’s been one of several heartbreaks for Perry, who has been in five of the last Stanley Cup Finals and has lost all five. Two of those came with the Oilers, who lost to the Florida Panthers in back-to-back years.

While the Kings had relatively big expectations this season, they entered deadline day three points shy of a playoff spot. With the trade, Perry joins a Lightning team that sits first in the Atlantic Division with a 38-18-4 record.

Perry will provide the Lightning not only with some snarl and veteran experience, but also with secondary scoring. The ageless wonder produced at a solid clip for the Kings, scoring 11 goals and 28 points through 50 outings. He was even better for the Oilers during last year’s playoff run, racking up 10 goals in 22 games.

Perry, who has logged 1,442 regular-season games in his outstanding career, has one Stanley Cup championship to date. That came in just his second NHL season as a member of the Anaheim Ducks in 2006-07.

Both the Lightning and Perry will hope that he’s able to win his second later this year. The Lightning haven’t won a playoff series since playing in the Cup Final in 2022.
