Emergency alert issued for destructive winds up to 130 km/h for parts of Alberta

An emergency alert was issued Thursday evening due to destructive winds moving through parts of north central Alberta.

The emergency alert stated that at 7:24 p.m. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for north central Alberta.

Extra care and attention should be exercised in and around the following localities: Leduc, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Tofield, Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park. Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a very dangerous thunderstorm capable of producing destructive wind gusts.

Extreme wind gusts to 130 km/h have developed ahead of thunderstorms to the west of the area.

“There is a risk of life-threatening injury”, the ECCC alert stated.

Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. If you hear roaring wind, see a funnel cloud, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or rain.
