Edmonton woman charged after 88-year-old man defrauded of $5M
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a 60-year-old woman after police allege she defrauded a local senior of approximately $5,000,000.
EPS said in a news release Thursday that back in 2019, police were contacted by the family of a now 88-year-old Edmonton man who they believed was being defrauded by an Edmonton woman. It was alleged to police that between 2008 and 2017, the woman befriended the man and slowly defrauded him of approximately $5 million.
To date, investigators have been able to substantiate at least $1.6 million in stolen funds. Following a lengthy investigation by the EPS Financial Crimes Section, Tina “Phoeut” Soeung, 60, was charged with one count of fraud over $5,000 on September 20, 2024.

Police also believe that Soeung may have befriended and defrauded others in a similar way. “This is an unfortunate case of the accused actively taking advantage of someone’s kindness and generosity, as is often the circumstance in frauds,” said Detective Dayna Bulas with the EPS Financial Crimes Section. “While we’re unable to recover the funds that were lost, we’re hopeful we can prevent the accused from victimizing others in a similar way.”
