A snow squall watch for Edmonton may impact your morning commute

Jan 15 2025, 11:13 pm

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a snow squall watch for Edmonton and the surrounding areas.

The weather agency says a narrow band of snow squalls is expected to develop by tomorrow morning, bringing brief but intense snowfall and gusty winds up to 80 kilometres per hour.

ECCC warns that snow squalls can dramatically change weather conditions, with clear skies turning to heavy snow within a few kilometres.

“Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather, and visibility could drop suddenly to near zero.”

Many regions across Alberta are under weather warnings this afternoon. To the north of Edmonton, areas like Fort McMurray and High Level are under a snowfall warning, with up to 25 centimetres of snow expected.

Southern Alberta, including High River and Lethbridge, extending to the US border, is under a wind warning, with wind speeds forecasted to reach 100 km/h or higher tomorrow.

So, you may want to plan ahead, as the morning commute could be tricky with the rapidly changing conditions.

Temperatures in Edmonton are set to plunge in the last half of this week, with Sunday expected to hit a low of -28°C. However, things will begin to warm up by Tuesday, reaching a high of 4°C.
