There's a thrift store and food bank in Edmonton dedicated to pets
We all need a helping hand during tough times, and for pets, that’s no exception. A new thrift store and pet advocacy centre in Edmonton is looking to fill that gap.
Founded in Calgary in 2019, Parachutes for Pets is a first-of-its-kind Pet Advocacy Centre dedicated to protecting the human-animal bond.
While the organization supports both people and their pets, its primary focus is building strong community systems that ensure animals remain with their families during times of need, according to its website.
“Parachutes for Pets is committed to assisting low-income individuals work toward better health and welfare for their pets through accessible programs and resources,” it reads.
The charity expanded to Edmonton earlier this year, and the pet thrift store offers new and gently used pet items at affordable prices, with every purchase supporting the organization’s programs.
Another of its core initiatives is the Pet Food Bank, the organization’s first program, where they say demand “continues to grow by the day.”
Those who visit during food bank hours and who provide valid proof of income can receive a “Harley’s Hamper,” with each household eligible for up to three hampers per year, support for up to two pets, and a one-time supply of veterinary food or cat litter when available.

For clients and families in crisis, Charlie’s Closet provides a free pet supply thrift store where owners can pick up essentials like leashes, treats, toys, and bedding at no cost.
Additionally, through its Safekeeping Program, pets can be temporarily cared for at the organization’s facility while their families face challenges such as medical emergencies, domestic violence, or housing insecurity.

Animals receive a safe place to stay, daily enrichment, and attentive care until they can be reunited with their families.
If you’re interested in helping out, Parachutes for Pets is also seeking volunteers and donations, including pet food and supplies, pet accessories and equipment, basic household and cleaning items, and gift cards.
