Edmonton Oilers looking at trading one of these two forwards: report

An Edmonton Oilers trade appears to be coming any day now, but who will be on the move remains to be seen.

The Oilers are getting close to activating Zach Hyman off of long-term injured reserve, as the 34-year-old is nearly fully recovered from a fractured wrist suffered in the Western Conference Final.

There’s just one problem, however. They don’t currently have the cap space to activate him.

Oilers management has been working the phones lately, trying to find a trading partner to help them open up some cap space. It’s been reported that both Troy Stecher and Ty Emberson are candidates to be moved, though it sounds as if there are a few forwards who could be headed out as well.

“They are going to have to juggle a few things financially,” David Pagnotta said on the Daily Faceoff Rundown on Thursday. “That’s why we’ve been hearing that [Ty] Emberson and [Troy] Stecher are out there. [Mattias] Janmark’s name is out there, as well [as David] Tomasek.”

For Janmark, he’s in the second year of a three-year contract that carries a $1.45 million cap hit. His deal also includes a 10-team no-trade list, giving him at least a bit of control over his future should he be dealt. The 32-year-old has yet to play this season due to an undisclosed injury.

Hearing Tomasek’s name comes as a bit of a surprise, as the Oilers just signed the European winger to a contract this past offseason. That said, his play has taken a step backward after a strong start to the season.

He’s been healthy scratched in two of the last three games and received just 6:12 in ice time on Tuesday versus the Dallas Stars. The 29-year-old is on a one-year deal that carries a cap hit of just $1.2 million.

Pagnotta also mentioned that Hyman is expected to be ready in roughly one week’s time, if not sooner. That means that Oilers management is going to need to figure out a trade quickly, whether it be Emberson, Stecher, Janmark, Tomasek, or perhaps somebody else whose name has yet to be brought up.
