It’s been a relatively quiet second day of the NHL Draft, though the Edmonton Oilers were able to make a transaction just minutes ago.
The Oilers trade came with the Nashville Predators in an exchange of draft picks. The Oilers were able to acquire the 131st overall selection from the Predators in exchange for a fifth-round selection in 2026. With the pick, the Oilers selected defenceman Asher Barnett.
Barnet spent the 2024-25 season playing with the US National Development team. In 21 games, he scored three goals and six points while recording eight penalty minutes. He also served as team captain.
Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff describes the left-shot blueliner as a good distributor who is always looking to create chances.
Asher Barnett to the Oilers.
Heās good as a distributor, and seems to always be looking to create something. Heās not big, but heās got some muscle to him. The U-18 captain put up modest numbers with the USNTDP this year but this felt like some of his best hockey at the U-18s.ā¦

Barnett is the third player the Oilers have selected so far in today’s draft. Their first selection, which came at 83rd overall, saw them pick forward Tommy Lafreniere from the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers. In 68 games this past season, he scored 24 goals and 56 points.
The Oilers next pick came at 117th overall, where they took another forward in David Lewandowski from the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades. The German born winger put up 15 goals and 39 points in 52 games this past season.
