Edmonton Oilers fans may get a chance to see 24-year-old defenceman Alec Regula dawn blue and orange after all.
The Oilers claimed Regula off of waivers from the Boston Bruins back in December, though he never got in any games during the entire 2024-25 season due to a lingering knee injury. Despite management not getting a first-hand look at him, however, they clearly have some belief in him, signing him to a two-year extension on Friday afternoon.

The entirety of the contract is a two-way deal, which will carry a cap hit of $775,000 at the NHL level. The first season of the contract will see him get a guaranteed $250,000 if he is to remain in the AHL over the course of the 2025-26 campaign, whereas in 2026-27 he will earn $450,000 in the AHL.
The right-shot defenceman has spent the vast majority of his four professional hockey seasons in the AHL, but was able to log 22 career NHL games over the course of three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks. In 2023-24, while with the Providence Bruins, he scored four goals and 26 points in 55 outings.
Though Regula is viewed as more of a depth piece for the Oilers, he does bring good size to the table at 6-foot-4, 211 pounds. Given the struggles the Oilers had on their right side this season, he may wind up earning a spot on the opening night roster next season should he have a strong training camp. If not, don’t be overly surprised to see him get in some games at a later date.
