What Edmonton Oilers players said after massive overtime win in Vegas

The Edmonton Oilers Game 2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights came with plenty of controversy.

The Oilers were able to pick up a 5-4 overtime victory on a goalf from Leon Draisaitl that came just moments after the referees missed what should have been a blatant tripping penalty on Viktor Arvidsson. The Golden Knights were rightfully upset about it afterward, but the Oilers certainly had no complaints and will return home with a 2-0 series lead.

“It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t pretty at all,” Connor McDavid told reporters afterward. “I thought [Calvin Pickard] held us in it. I thought we were fortunate to find a way to be up two a couple times there, but obviously didn’t close it out. Found a way, though.”

As McDavid indicated, it was far from a pretty effort. Unlike Game 1 where the Oilers controlled play, the Golden Knights were the far better team on Thursday night. A big part of that was due to the fact that both McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were far from their best, though they came through with a big goal when it mattered the most.

“We didn’t have much going on. Obviously a couple great plays and then it’s just all world, that’s all Davo,” Draisaitl said on his game winner. “It’s tough to even really celebrate my part of the goal.”

Like McDavid indicated, Pickard was absolutely incredible between the pipes, making several ten-bell saves, particularly in the first period and overtime, that gave the Oilers a chance to win. He is now 6-0-0 in these Stanley Cup Playoffs and has become one of the biggest storylines throughout the league.

“He’s been solid, giving us a chance to win every game since he came in,” Zach Hyman said. “We needed it tonight a little bit more than other nights, and he was up to the task. It’s a huge effort by him to really steal one here.”

Before this series began, Oilers fans would have been more than happy to split the opening two games on the road. Instead, they find themselves up 2-0, and will now head back to Rogers Place in hopes of gaining a daunting 3-0 lead on Saturday night.
