“It’s tough,” said an emotional Maroon. “Sometimes you’ve gotta give up everything you know and everything you’ve dreamed of your whole life. I just know it’s time for me, time for my family to go start a new chapter in our life. To get to have a special moment tonight, be in St. Louis and have my family come to town. I won a Stanley Cup here.
“I’m just going to finish this year like every game is going to be my last game. I’m going to play as hard as I can and do everything I can to keep winning hockey [games]. This is all I know. It’s tough.”
Maroon began his career with the Anaheim Ducks before being acquired by the Oilers during the 2015-16 season. It was with the Oilers where his career really began to take off.
Playing on an Oilers team that lacked skilled wingers, Maroon got the opportunity to play on a line alongside Connor McDavid. It paid off for both himself and the Oilers, as he was able to score 27 goals and help snap the Oilers’ 11-year playoff drought.
Maroon wound up being traded to the New Jersey Devils the following season, before signing as a free-agent with the Blues. That began an epic run in itself, as he won a Cup with the Blues that very same season, before winning each of the next two seasons as well with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The man known as ‘The Big Rig’ has had an extremely impressive career for a sixth-round pick, recording 125 goals and 320 points in 839 regular season games split between the Ducks, Oilers, Devils, Blues, Lightning, Minnesota Wild, Boston Bruins, and Blackhawks.
