The Edmonton Oilers have a new goal song with a personal connection to the city.

The Oilers debuted their new goal song, “Striking Oil,” during their home opener against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.

Edmonton-based band Royal Tusk created the song specifically for the Oilers, giving the team’s latest goal celebration a distinctly local feel.

The band, which formed in Edmonton, was brought in to create a song that would fit the atmosphere inside Rogers Place whenever the Oilers find the back of the net.

As the title suggests, the new song plays into Edmonton’s long-standing connection to the oil industry. It also serves as a fitting description for what Oilers fans hope to see plenty of this season.

The team gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the song, with Royal Tusk discussing the process of putting it together and what it meant to create something specifically for the Oilers.

“If you want a song that sounds like the Oilers and sounds like Edmonton, get an Edmonton rock band to write it,” said Royal Tusk’s lead guitarist Quinn Cyrankiewicz.

Unfortunately for Oilers fans, the song’s first night in action ended with a frustrating result.

Edmonton fell 6-5 to Vancouver in overtime. That meant the new tune was played five times, albeit in a losing result.

The Oilers have used several different goal songs over the years, making the introduction of this new track a notable change for fans inside Rogers Place. The new song also comes with a bit of mystery.

It is not currently available on streaming platforms, meaning fans can’t simply head to Spotify or Apple Music and add it to their playlists. That may change in the future, but for now, fans wanting to hear it will need to get to a game at Rogers Place.

The Oilers are expected to have a high-powered offence this season, and they certainly lived up to that bill on Wednesday. While they will look to do a better job at keeping the puck out of their own net going forward, fans attending home games should expect to hear the new track plenty and often.
