Edmonton Oilers make pair of back-to-back Friday morning trades

The Edmonton Oilers are keeping things busy before most people in town might’ve even had time for a coffee.

On Friday morning, the Oilers made a massive splash, finally parting ways with goaltender Stuart Skinner in a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fellow goalie Tristan Jarry was the centrepiece coming the other way along with forward Sam Poulin, while the Oilers also sent defenceman Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round pick to Pittsburgh.

But it wasn’t Edmonton’s only trade of the day, as they also sent a 2027 third-round pick to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenceman Spencer Stastney.

Who are the Oilers getting in Stastney?

The Stastney move is almost certainly in response to knowing they’d be getting rid of Kulak, who was playing an average of 17:42 this season for the Oilers. Stastney has been playing a slightly smaller role in Nashville, averaging 14:52 this season while putting up one goal and eight assists in 30 games.

He’s likely headed to Toronto to join the team ahead of a Saturday night matchup against the Maple Leafs.

A 25-year-old American, he’s spent his entire four-year career with the Predators organization.

He’s a great skater, a lot of quickness, and he’s been very effective in the penalty kill, and he’s got some offense to his game as well,” Oilers general manager Stan Bowman said in a press conference following the moves. “I think he’s really hasn’t reached his his true potential yet, he’s 25 years old.”
