Edmonton Oilers fans react to second year of Stanley Cup heartbreak

Edmonton Oilers fans didn’t expect to feel this same heartbreak for a second-straight time.

After falling in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final just under a year ago, many felt that it would be them coming out on top of this year’s rematch versus the Florida Panthers. Unfortunately for those fans, that failed to be the case.

The Oilers watched the Panthers hoist the Stanley Cup once again last night after falling by a 5-1 final in Game 6. While it was a crushing defeat, there were plenty of fans who made it clear how proud they were of their team in a year where few thought they would get back to the Final.

Of course, there were some who didn’t express that same positivity.

“Get McDavid out of that dump,” one Instagram comment read. “Poor guy will never win there.”

Others expressed the Oilers’ need to improve their roster in order to be able to reach their ultimate goal. One common suggestion was that they will need to improve their goaltending tandem in the offseason, as neither Stuart Skinner nor Calvin Pickard were good enough in the Cup Final.

While Skinner wasn’t at his best, he didn’t have a ton of help, either. The Oilers were very quiet offensively in the final two games of this series, and it was clear that some fans think Skinner was nothing more than an easy target to point the finger at.

“I feel for Skinner,” one user commented on Instagram. “He goes from hero to zero so fast. Back to back shut out games to death threats to his family a month later. His inconsistency is his downfall, especially when defence leaves him out to dry. Hopeful for a bounce back from the whole team next year!”

While it’s clear that there is plenty of emotion among the Oilers fan base right now, it’s also clear that this team isn’t far off from a championship. There will need to be some changes made in the offseason, but assuming they are able to re-sign Connor McDavid, they should have plenty more opportunities to win it all in the future.
