Alberta has plenty of lovely areas to call home, but one spot just outside of Edmonton was ranked as the second most livable in the province.
The Globe and Mail recently released its third edition of Canada’s 100 most livable cities, with the ranking assessing 454 cities using 58 variables across 10 categories, including economy, housing, demographics, health care, safety, education, community, amenities, transportation, and climate.
“Our rankings are designed to help Canadians identify communities where they can flourish based on their individual circumstances,” wrote The Globe and Mail.
It also added new climate variables to measure how long periods of cold or heat affect energy costs, strain infrastructure and cause discomfort. It also included three new variables in the health-care category.
The newspaper also broke down the rankings by city size: major, large, mid-sized, and small.
Three of the four top-ranked cities are in the Greater Vancouver Area, which the newspaper stated as a credit to the livability of that region as a whole.
Strathcona County took 39th place, rising three spots and was the second-highest-ranked spot in Alberta, after the community of Okotoks in 29th.

Strathcona County is a specialized municipality with nine hamlets — both urban and rural. Sherwood Park is the urban area (home to over 75,000 residents), according to the county’s website.
The surrounding rural region is home to the communities of Antler Lake, Ardrossan, Collingwood Cove, Half Moon Lake, Hastings Lake, Josephburg, North Cooking Lake and South Cooking Lake.
Other surrounding communities also made the list, along with Edmonton. St. Albert came in at 45th place, with a drop of 22 compared to last year’s ranking. Fort Saskatchewan flew up the list, rising by 172 positions to come in at 86th, and Spruce Grove leaped by 45 spots to sit at 94th, just a few spots behind Edmonton in 90th.
