You can finally get cell service in Edmonton’s LRT tunnels
Some Edmontonians can now stay connected underground, with cellphone service finally rolling out across the city’s LRT tunnels.
Edmonton Transit Service, Open City and Technology (OCT), and Telus have announced that underground cellular service is now available.
That means riders can make calls, text, stream video, music and audiobooks, and scroll while travelling through the tunnels.
For now, the service is only available to Telus, Bell, and their sub-brands, with more providers expected to begin offering service in the coming weeks.

The project has been in the works for a while.
In November 2024, the City revealed plans to bring cellphone coverage to Edmonton’s LRT tunnels and underground stations, including a pilot project in 2025 to test the system before a full rollout.
In January 2025, City Council approved a deal with Telus to design and install a permanent cellular network in all seven underground stations and connecting tunnels.
The City set aside $4.7 million for the project through the Fall 2023 Capital Budget. The partnership with Telus was intended to avoid the long and costly process of designing and building the project alone, the City told us in 2025.
