The Edmonton Football Team has expanded its list of potential names.
Lawyers for the team have filed trademark applications for two more potential candidates to be the team’s new name: Edmonton Energy and Edmonton Elks. Those names were not on the shortlist of the seven names that fans voted on last month.
That survey asked fans to rate the seven candidates from first to worst.
Edmonton dropped the “Eskimos” name following similar decisions made by Washington’s NFL team and Cleveland’s MLB team as a way to eliminate racist or stereotypical names associated with sports teams. The team is currently called the Edmonton Football Team or EE Football Team since the change.
During the first phase of the selection process, the team said it had received 14,833 submissions with 2,047 unique name entries. They appear to have now narrowed it to nine.
The club has not provided a timeline for when it will announce its rebranding. However, the fan survey for selecting the new name concluded last month, and the team said that the final rankings of that survey will play a part in the next steps the team will take.
