Edmonton bridge closures this year could impact your commute

Edmonton commuters could face detours in the coming months and years as the City prepares for major bridge repairs and closures under the Bridge Renewal Program.
Several key crossings over the North Saskatchewan River are set to begin maintenance in 2025 to extend their lifespan and prevent unplanned closures.
Here is what to look out for this year, according to the City of Edmonton:
Wellington Bridge: Replacement of the bridge will begin in late 2025, aligning with an anticipated completion of the Valley Line West LRT road work on Stony Plain Road. The bridge is expected to reopen by late 2026, with landscaping finished in 2027.
Dawson Bridge: Repairs starting in the summer of 2025 will extend the bridge’s service life. This work will require occasional night and weekend closures. Intermittent lane reductions are also expected. Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Low Level Bridge (Southbound): Maintenance will require a full closure of the southbound structure starting in late Summer/Fall 2025. Southbound traffic will be rerouted to the northbound Low Level Bridge, while northbound traffic will shift to 98 Avenue (James MacDonald Bridge). Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
High Level Bridge: Design for renewal is in progress, with construction timelines to be determined.
The City says it’s coordinating bridge work with other road and utility projects to reduce disruptions.
“Traffic management plans will be further communicated as specific project construction timelines are confirmed.”
