Coronavirus kills another two residents of Edmonton care home

Two more residents died from coronavirus at Edmonton’s Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre over the weekend, bringing the death toll from the home’s current outbreak to 31.

The home posted the update to its website Sunday afternoon, when it also noted nine more residents are dealing with active coronavirus infections.

Eight employees at the home also have active infections right now, according to the bulletin.

So far, 39 residents and 25 staff members have recovered from their infections.

“We’re working closely with public health and Alberta Health Services on this,” Michelle Bonnici said in a July 17 update on the coronavirus situation at the home. The outbreak was declared back in June.

It’s not known how the virus entered the building, Bonnici said.

The home is still using outbreak protocol to limit the virus’ spread, including limiting resident movement throughout the home, stepping up cleaning, and ensuring staff have appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
