Coronavirus halts production of Corona beer

The Mexican brewer that makes Corona beer is stopping production of the popular beverage because the Mexican government has ordered all non-essential businesses closed.

Grupo Modelo, which brews Corona, Modelo, and other beers, posted a statement to Twitter saying saying operations would be suspended as of Sunday, April 5.

“Grupo Modelo abides by measures issued by the Federal Government to deal with SARS-CoV2,” the tweet translates to.

The Mexican government ordered it and other businesses closed to stop the spread of COVID-19. But if the government changes its mind and decides the beer-maker is an essential business, Grupo Modelo is prepared to continue operations with a significant portion of staff working from home.

The company is owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, which told Daily Hive in a statement that its people’s health and safety is its highest priority.

“We continue to work with the Mexican government in this fast-moving environment to resume our operations when appropriate, following the highest standards for protecting our colleagues,” the company said.

Corona beer shares part of its name with the novel coronavirus (formally SARS-CoV2) that’s responsible for the ongoing global pandemic.

The beer and the virus have nothing to do with each other, except for sharing a name. Corona comes from the Latin word coronam, meaning crown. In the virus’ case, “crown” describes the appearance of the pathogen’s surface under a microscope.
