The Edmonton Oilers may have come up just short in a 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, but they scored one of the strangest goals of the season.
In the third period of last night’s game, Oilers veteran Corey Perry was able to wire home his eighth of the year while avoiding a tray of nachos on the ice. The goal came just a minute after the Capitals made it 3-1 and it appears a disgruntled Oilers fan had seen enough, tossing his entire tray of nachos onto the ice while the play was still live.

Rather than call the play dead, the officials decided to keep it moving, which resulted in Perry narrowly avoiding skating right onto the nacho tray and scoring a goal. The Capitals were not happy with the officials, but the goal stood.

Daily Hive asked Perry about the strange goal after the game, to which he said he had no idea.
“I didn’t even see them,” Perry admitted. “If they were there before or whatever, I was focused on the play and [Leon Draisaitl] made a great play.”
"I thought we played pretty solid defensively, maybe a couple of line rushes against that we could shore up… Unfortunately we couldn't find one at the end."

Despite ending in a losing effort, Oilers fans and media members around the league had an absolute field day with the moment on social media. Tons of memes and jokes were made to commemorate the “nacho” goal. Whether or not the tray was fully loaded or just simple nachos and cheese is not known.
The top comment may belong to beloved Oilers Sportsnet reporter Gene Principe, who crafted an absolute pun-tastic response to the unusual goal.
That was a jalapeno for @Capitals Logan Thompsonn to stop. Nobody is going to tell @EdmontonOilers Corey Perry thats nacho goal 3-2. I know cheesy.

I definitely don’t condone throwing things on the ice, but Corey Perry becoming the Nacho Man has potential here….

Is that the first time a goal was scored in an NHL game with a container of nachos on the ice?

It wasn’t the result that Oilers fans were hoping for, but at the very least, they were able to have some fun during the game.
The team will look to rebound as they gear up with a rematch against their rival Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night.
