The Canadians are moving on to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup, and nobody was more hyped than head coach Jesse Marsch.

It’s been a long time coming for the Canadian program to get to this point, and they will now have a chance to continue their historic World Cup run after defeating South Africa in their Round of 32 match on Sunday.

Stephen Eustáquio notched the game-winner late into Canada’s victory over South Africa, sending the country into celebration from coast-to-coast. The Canadian bench was also thrown into ecstasy, with Marsch being at the centre of the celebration.

The veteran coach delivered an amazing speech to his players following the victory that would make most Canadians run through a wall.

“You guys are Canadian heroes,” Marsch said in a passionate speech on the pitch. “You should be so proud of who you are, you should be so proud of this game.

“You never crossed the heat. You went after it, played at the point. Moment after moment, you are Canadian heroes.”

The 52-year-old coach may be American-born, but he has been all-in for Canada since being hired by the national team in 2024. His passion for the game has been on display during this World Cup, with some of his sideline reactions going viral on social media.

He didn’t disappoint with his reaction to Eustáquio’s electric game-winning, showing off some pure emotion. It’s clear that Marsch knows just how big this moment is for the country.

“It’s the hard work from these guys, the character of them, they’re Canadian heroes,” Marsch said after the match. “That’s what I told them at the end. They’re now Canadian heroes. I’m so happy for them.”

There is no doubt that Marsch will cement himself as the most successful coach in Canadian men’s soccer history. He has led Canada to its best World Cup result and is now just one victory away from advancing to the quarter-finals.

The next challenge will be their biggest one yet, as they will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 on July 4 in Houston.
