Note: While local parks, shops, and events are beginning to reopen, Alberta Health Services is reminding individuals to monitor their health for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. And if you’re not feeling well, they recommend staying home at this time. If you decide to go out, maintain the 6-feet physical distancing guidelines.

While the province is easing some of the current restrictions, provincial campgrounds will be reopening by maintaining half of their usual capacity.

According to Alberta Parks, the online campsite reservation system will reopen May 14 for campsite bookings starting June 1 onward.

Occupancy will be limited to 50% capacity to ensure physical distancing guidelines continue to be followed.

Additionally, campsites are open only to Albertans, meaning out-of-province visitors are not allowed at this time.

“We’re still dealing with COVID-19, so extra steps need to be taken this summer to ensure everyone’s safety,” said Alberta Parks.

“We will try to maintain as many existing reservations as possible, but for campgrounds already over 50% capacity, cancellations will occur randomly.”

Alberta Parks is hoping to have most campsites open by June 1, with more expected to open on June 15, as staff begin to receive proper protective equipment.

Group and comfort camping will not be offered this season.

“We are hoping to have as many open as possible by June 1 so Albertans can enjoy our parks again while adhering to current health orders,” said Alberta Parks.

On May 1, the vehicle access restriction to parking lots and staging areas in provincial parks and on public land was also lifted, but Albertans are encouraged to visit parks near their homes and follow public health guidelines.

According to Alberta Parks, boat launches will also be open by May 14.

The province’s fire ban remains in place, and non-compliance may result in extreme fines.
