Broberg's agent reveals he was asking teams to offer sheet the ex-Oilers defenceman
Even two years later, Edmonton Oilers fans are still salty about the offer sheets that saw Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg leave the organization.
The Oilers and their fan base were completely blindsided during the 2024 offseason after the St. Louis Blues signed both of their two talented RFAs to offer sheets. Broberg’s deal was a two-year, $9.16-million deal, while Holloway’s was also a two-year deal worth $4.58 million.
The Oilers, who were in a cap crunch after signing several free agents, chose not to match either deal and, as a result, lost two of the best young talents they had in their organization. As it turns out, that was exactly what Broberg’s agent, Darren Ferris, had planned all along.
The long-time NHL player agent was on The PuckPedia Hockey Show earlier this week and explained that he had been contacting several teams about the possibility of an offer sheet given the Oilers’ cap situation.
“In Broberg and Holloway’s case, I originally was working on Philip’s [contract] and calling around to try and position that,” Ferris said. “I was actually helping Holloway’s agent at the time. He reached out for some help in his negotiation. He was a new agent, and I provided him with some counsel on contract negotiations.
“It kind of morphed into me setting up the offer sheets for both players.”
Both Broberg and Holloway have excelled with the Blues over the past two seasons. Broberg, who has quickly blossomed into a top-four defenceman, signed a six-year, $48-million extension this past January. Holloway, meanwhile, agreed to a five-year, $38.75-million deal in May.
While the Oilers were able to make it back to the Stanley Cup Final the season after losing Holloway and Broberg, they struggled throughout the entire 2025-26 campaign, one that ended with a first-round loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
Though the Oilers have made some important and necessary changes this summer, they would be in a far better spot with Broberg and Holloway on their roster. Aside from blaming management, fans can now point to Ferris as the catalyst for what transpired.
