Snakes force closure of popular Elk Island National Park spot

A popular driving loop in Elk Island National Park, east of Edmonton, is temporarily closed to vehicle traffic while garter snakes make their seasonal migration for the winter.

Parks Canada confirmed to Daily Hive that the Bison Loop Road is closed to vehicles for now, but visitors can still access the area on foot, so long as they keep a safe distance from bison and other wildlife.

Parking is available across the Parkway from the entrance to the Bison Loop, as well as at the Mud Lake lot. Parks Canada said there is currently no anticipated reopening date.

The temporary closure is meant to help the snakes move safely across the area as they get set for the long winter ahead. In late August, Alberta Parks issued an advisory for drivers in the Cooking Lake–Blackfoot and Miquelon Lake areas, just south of Elk Island National Park, to watch for garter snakes on the roads as they return to their hibernation sites.

Even with the loop closed to cars, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy a fall outing in the park. Visitors can wander the short and easy Living Waters Boardwalk or opt for the Shoreline Trail, a flat, family-friendly route.

Astotin Lake is another option, with picnic spots and lookouts that make it easy to soak in the crisp air and changing leaves.

For those hoping to explore Bison Loop Road on foot, Parks Canada advises giving the animals plenty of space, avoiding blind corners, and never trying to move through a herd.

Visitors should stay alert, back away slowly if needed, and always maintain at least 100 metres between themselves and the bison.
