One of Edmonton's best ice cream parlours just launched something brand new

One of Edmonton’s most popular ice cream parlours just opened its self-proclaimed sidekick shop, continuing to serve Edmonton communities in new and exciting ways.

Kind Ice Cream, established in 2019 by Paula Shyba, Nicole Bhar, and Candyce Morris, has become a community staple in the vibrant neighbourhood of Ritchie, creating a vibrant and friendly spot for everyone to make memories and, most importantly, enjoy delicious ice cream. It has expanded to Highlands and Wîhkwêntôwin (formerly known as Oliver), housing three solid locations in total.

This week, Kind Ice Cream unveiled Bestie, its summer shop outside the Crestwood Community Hall, run out of a solar-powered shipping container.

The shop runs entirely off the grid, powered by solar panels and a high-efficiency battery system that keeps the ice cream perfectly cold, even on the hottest days. Bestie uses minimal propane as a backup, but its goal is to be 100 per cent solar-powered for the entire summer.

The idea was born out of a desire to serve more Edmonton communities in a format which allowed them to have more flexibility and less pressure coming from selling cold ice cream through cold winters. This new shop also reflects one of Kind Ice Cream’s core values, kindness, which is extended to the environment as well as people.

Currently, this location only serves scoops in nine familiar Kind Ice Cream flavours the community knows and loves, like Birthday Cake, Chocolate Milk, and its Real Deal Strawberry. Pints are not currently being served, but may potentially be served in the future.

Open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., be sure to check out Bestie this summer!
