The Edmonton Oilers pulled out their biggest win of the year against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night, but it didn’t come without some controversy.
Three players left the game for Edmonton in the 4-3 victory, including goalie Connor Ingram, who was bulldozed by Nathan MacKinnon in the second period. It was blatant goalie interference, but the refs went a step further and decided to call a major penalty and kick MacKinnon out of the game.
The play garnered plenty of debate on whether or not a major penalty was necessary.

There was some contact from Darnell Nurse on MacKinnon before he made impact with Ingram. That fact has some blaming the Oilers defenceman for what happened on the play, including Avalanche coach Jared Bednar, who went on a rant after the game.
“I really don’t give a crap if the goalie is hurt. That’s on their d-man, not on our guy,” Bednar said. “There’s no chance that he hits the goalie if Nurse doesn’t run into him.
“If you put guys into your own goalie, it’s not a penalty, that’s how I see it.”

Bednar insisted that the overhead replay of the incident showed that MacKinnon’s skates were pointed away from the Oilers goaltender before Nurse ran into him.
Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed that Ingram left the game because of the concussion spotter, and did not have an update on his injury status postgame. It remains to be seen if Ingram will be ready to start in Friday’s game against the Dallas Stars.
There were also no injury updates on defenceman Ty Emberson or forward Colton Dach, who also left the game due to injuries.
