Two Alberta TV stations go off the air after nearly 50 years

They say all good things must come to an end, but it’s especially hard when it’s a local staple. After nearly 50 years on the air, the Alberta TV stations CITL-TV and CKSA-TV will be shutting down.

Based in Lloydminster, Alberta, the two stations represented the media company Stingray’s sole conventional television properties. For decades, CITL and CKSA have been staples in their communities, sharing local stories, connecting neighbours, and celebrating the spirit of Alberta.

According to the press release shared on Stingray, this decision comes after six years of challenging economic conditions, a steep decline in viewership, and a drop in revenues by more than half.

“This difficult decision to cease our television operations in Lloydminster was made after prolonged consideration and thorough exploration of alternative possibilities for the properties, including ownership transfer to other broadcasters,” said Steve Jones, President of Stingray Radio.

“We wish to recognize the dedication and perseverance of the staff of CITL/CKSA whose commitment and passion for television have informed and entertained their community. We also sincerely thank our viewers, our community partners, and our advertisers.”

Unfortunately, it seems the cost of maintaining television production in a market the size of Lloydminster was no longer sustainable.

Despite this loss, Stingray went on to assure that they remain committed to serving the community of Lloydminster through the local radio station New Country 95.9, as well as four radio stations in the surrounding area – Hot 101.3 in Bonnyville, boom 95.3 in Cold Lake, boom 101.9 in Wainwright, and Hot 93.7 in Wainwright.

At least we’ll always have the memories.
