RCMP in central Alberta say a driver allegedly told them he was intoxicated and waited for them to arrive at a restaurant due to wanting a burger.

Mounties say on Sunday, April 19, shortly before 4 a.m., Red Deer RCMP received a 911 call from a man requesting assistance at a downtown fast food restaurant. The man reported that the staff at the restaurant were demanding he leave, though he stated he had not done anything wrong and had driven 35 minutes to get a burger.

RCMP went to the fast food restaurant and found a car in the parking lot along with the male caller. Police spoke to the man, who said he did not like how the staff were speaking to him. The man admitted to being intoxicated and advised police he waited for them to come as he still wanted a burger.

Police spoke to staff on site, who advised that they had explained to the man that their systems were not working and they were not able to serve him.

The investigation led police to determine that the man who made the call to them was the driver of the car. After observing signs of intoxication, police demanded he provide a breath sample. The man, a 38-year-old resident of Sylvan Lake, refused to provide a sample and was issued an Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) Fail and vehicle seizure under the Traffic Safety Act.

“Red Deer RCMP remind all drivers to plan ahead and arrange a designated driver if you have consumed alcohol or other intoxicating substances. There is no room on our roads for impaired drivers,” police added in a news release.
