If you woke up shivering this morning, it’s not just because it’s the dead of winter—Alberta is one of the coldest places on Earth today.

According to WX-Now, a platform that tracks extreme weather globally, seven locations in Alberta are among the coldest on the planet.

High Level is currently Alberta’s coldest spot, sitting at a bone-chilling -36°C. Bow Valley follows closely at -35°C as the second-coldest in the province and ninth on Earth, followed by Red Deer at the same temperature.

Extreme cold warnings are in effect for much of Alberta, with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) warning of wind chill values between -40°C and -45°C in some spots.

“Wind chill values will moderate by Monday afternoon, although extreme cold wind chills will return tonight for some areas,” ECCC states.

Yakutsk, Russia, is the coldest place on Earth today, with a temperature of -38°C and a wind chill of -47°C. Watson Lake, Yukon, is second, with a temperature of -38°C, followed by Fort Yukon, Alaska, and Clyde River, Nunavut, with temperatures of -37°C.
