Monday is shaping up to a potentially active severe weather day in parts of Alberta, with thunderstorms that could produce massive hail and a tornado.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), thunderstorm outlooks from the Storm Prediction Centre say that Monday, Aug. 18 looks like a “favourable day for severe weather over central Alberta,” though model to model variation reduces its confidence a little.
Forecasters say there is a risk of supercell thunderstorm which would bring a potentially dangerous hail risk to areas confined to west-central Alberta, while a tornado risk may be present for areas in east-central Alberta.
The moderate-risk zone in the province includes the Edmonton metro region and a large chunk of central Alberta, including Lloydminster and Hinton. Hazards in this area include wind gusts of up to 110 km/h, rainfall up to 30 millimetres, hail up to six centimetres in size, and a tornado risk.
Two minor risk zones are also present in large sections of Alberta, with largest seeing areas such as just west and north of the Calgary metro region, Grande Prairie, Jasper and Banff National Parks potentially seeing thunderstorms with wind gusts of up to 70 km/h, up to 20 millimetres of rainfall, and hail up to one centimetre in size.
The second minor risk zone runs across northern Alberta, with areas such as High Level eyeing up the chance of up to 20 millimetres of rain.
