The Alberta fall forecast is out and we're about to be spoiled

Albertans may not want to pack away the patio set or turn off the AC just yet, as Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) predicts the province will see above-seasonal conditions from September through November.

“That warmer-than-normal trend sticks around,” said Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with ECCC. “Confidence is a bit lower for the fall season as a whole, but even with those probabilities shifted down, that warmer trend is still in place across Alberta for those three months.”

Edmonton and Calgary fall into a medium-confidence range of a warmer-than-usual fall, Climenhaga noted, with models showing higher certainty of an above-average season in eastern Canada.

Alberta’s fall weather is known for its swings, with everything from sudden cold snaps to stretches of late-season warmth. Climenhaga mentioned that even a brief burst of heat, like the one we experienced at the end of August, can shift the seasonal average and make what felt like a cool summer appear warmer on paper.

When it comes to precipitation, the outlook is less clear. Most of Alberta is showing no strong signal, though there is a possibility of wetter-than-normal conditions in the extreme northwestern regions of the province. The foothills near Calgary and possibly extending to Edmonton could also experience a wetter fall, although confidence remains low.

So, expect more warmth than chill heading into fall, and if you’ve spent a bit too much time indoors this past summer, at least you’ll have a chance to make up for it now!
