If you’re looking for a day out in the Prairies, some Alberta spots just found themselves on a list of the best Prairie day trips that are worth the drive.

World Atlas recently compiled a list of five amazing Prairie day trips that are worth the drive, and Alberta’s dinosaur hot spots made the cut.

Drumheller was named as one of the top places to visit, along with Midland Provincial Park and Dinosaur Provincial Park. “Alberta, Canada, boasts the greatest diversity of dinosaur fossils on the planet. A road trip through its south-central reaches is, therefore, not only a scenic affair but a prehistoric experience,” reads the list.

Drumheller was touted for its dinosaur sculptures found throughout the town, and most notably, Tyra, the 25-metre tall T-Rex that visitors can climb and take photos with.

Just six kilometres from the town sits Midland Provincial Park, which is home to the one and only Royal Tyrell Museum. The museum is home to one of the world’s largest displays of dinosaurs, with over 130,000 fossils.

While visiting Midland Park, you can also check out the Badlands Interpretive Trail, a 1.4-kilometre trail that leads you through the stunning landscapes of the Alberta Badlands.

If you’re looking to make the most out of your Prairie day trip, you can head two hours east of Drumheller and reach Dinosaur Provincial Park

“This UNESCO World Heritage Site features 24 hiking trails, a scenic ring road, and stunning panoramic viewpoints that showcase the majesty of the badlands.”

Dinosaur Provincial Park offers some of the most amazing views of the Badlands, and as the name suggests, has deep roots in Alberta’s paleontology. According to Alberta Parks, over 150 complete dinosaur skeletons have been found in the area, as well as 50 dinosaur species.
