If you spend any amount of time near this busy intersection in central Edmonton, you’ll want to take note of a significant closure set to take effect soon.

According to a construction notice from Marigold Infrastructure Partners and the City of Edmonton, starting on or around April 22, the intersection of Stony Plain Road and 124 Street will be closed to all vehicle traffic for about eight weeks to make way for Valley Line West LRT construction.

During the closure, crews will be removing sidewalks and roadways, upgrading underground utilities, installing soil cells and tree pits, adding permanent streetlights and traffic signals, pouring new concrete curbs, sidewalks, and pavement, and installing track slabs.

Drivers won’t be able to pass through the intersection. Detours will be in place, and parking bans will be enforced on 104th Avenue, 105th Avenue, and 123rd Street — signage will be posted in the area.

Pedestrian access will be mostly maintained. However, detours will be in place.

Construction is expected to take place largely during the day: Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., though some overnight work might be needed.

Those in the area can expect some noise and an increase in construction vehicles in the area, but crews will try to limit the disruption.

Emergency services will use 123 Street as a detour route during the closure.

The full closure is expected to last about eight weeks, but construction in the area will continue beyond that until it’s completed.
