Vancouver is no stranger to placing highly on rankings based on various criteria, but it just fell shy of the top 10 of a new global ranking for livable cities.

Today, Global Citizen Solutions, a migration consultancy firm, released its list of the world’s most livable cities for expats.

Lisbon, Amsterdam and Melbourne cracked the top three, with Tokyo, Copenhagen and Seoul rounding out the top 10.

Vancouver fell just shy of the top 10, ranking 11th, but it also ranks as the only Canadian city on the list.

“The 35 cities were selected based on their relevance to active relocation decisions rather than prestige or population size. The list spans Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Oceania, and includes both established relocation hubs and destinations that may be undervalued in current relocation discourse,” Global Citizen Solutions said.

The index ranks cities based on a set of variables, including cost of living, personal safety, air quality, health-care quality, ease of settling in, English proficiency, and enhanced mobility.

Those variables then factor into the overall score. Top-ranked Lisbon scored 88.49, while 11th-ranked Vancouver scored a 78.72, just under Seoul’s 78.89.

Global Citizen Solutions praised Vancouver based on a few of those variables, including environment and English proficiency. Vancouver was also mentioned under enhanced mobility when compared to other cities like Singapore.

Not only was Vancouver the only Canadian city to make the list, but it was also one of only two North American cities that were ranked, with the other being San Jose.
