Travelling to the U.S. from Canada? Be sure to check the latest travel advisory, as the Government of Canada has issued a new safety update.

As of Dec. 24, anyone travelling to the U.S. from Canada is advised to “take normal security precautions.” However, the advisory urges anyone travelling to certain parts of southern California to be extra cautious.

“The State of California has declared a state of emergency in multiple counties due to heavy rains that could lead to flooding, rockslides, and mudslides,” reads the update.

NBC News reports that a major storm caused catastrophic flooding during the Christmas holidays and left three people dead.

Affected areas include Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Shasta, where evacuations are underway. In addition, there are reports in the area of widespread flooding, which may cause damage to roads and bridges.

The National Weather Service is warning of dangerous floods and is warning people to “never drive through flooded roads.”

“Stay away from creeks and streams,” reads the statement. “Be aware: it takes less and less rain for there be more and more impact as the week progresses.”

Travellers are warned that disruptions may impact essential services such as transportation, power, water and food supply, telecommunications networks, emergency services, and medical care.

Canadian travellers who find themselves in the area are urged to “exercise caution” and avoid flooded or landslide-prone zones. They’re also urged to monitor local news and weather reports and to follow the instructions of local authorities, including evacuation orders.
