Global messages of condolences pour in after Tumbler Ridge shooting

The deadly shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., has sparked an outpouring of condolences and support from across Canada and beyond.

On Tuesday afternoon, police responded to reports of a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. B.C. RCMP said that the incident left 10 people dead and many others injured, prompting a large-scale emergency response.

On Wednesday morning, Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with reporters at a media scrum, stating that it’s “a very difficult day for the nation.”

“This morning, parents, grandparents, sisters, [and] brothers in Tumbler Ridge will wake up without someone they love. The nation mourns with you. Canada stands by you,” he said. “I want to thank and pass on a number of world leaders who’ve reached out directly to me in solidarity and compassion. France, the United Kingdom, his majesty himself, Norway, Finland, India, the United Arab Emirates, and many others. The world is with you.”

Several world leaders took to social media to express their support and sympathy.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said that the country “stands in solidarity with the people of Canada in this moment of profound grief.”

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine, stated, “When children are killed, no one should remain indifferent.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “Australian hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom also shared a message on social media, stating that “no community should endure this kind of violence.”

Leaders across Canada took to social media to share condolences.

B.C. Premier David Eby said that the government will “ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days.”

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said that the city stands with Tumbler Ridge, stating, “No community should ever have to experience a tragedy of this nature.”

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated, “I am devastated by the horrific shooting in Tumbler Ridge.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that the province is ready to support the people of B.C.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said, “Our hearts go out to you and your community.”

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre stated, “Our prayers are with the families, students, teachers, first responders, and the entire community grieving this profound loss.”

Team Canada also shared a statement on its website in the wake of the tragedy.

“We are heartbroken by the news of the horrific school shooting that occurred in British Columbia,” reads the statement. “Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones, those who are injured, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community. Team Canada stands with everyone affected as they navigate difficult days ahead.”

Condolences and messages of support also poured in from around the world.

In a message shared on X, King Charles III stated, “We can only begin to imagine the appalling shadow that has now descended across Tumbler Ridge.”
