There's an actual Trump Avenue in Canada that could get renamed soon
Did you know there’s a residential street in Canada’s capital with Donald Trump’s name on it? Well, hopefully not for long.
Ottawa City Council is reportedly set to vote on a proposal to rename Trump Avenue, a residential street that was named after the current U.S. president more than 20 years ago.
River Ward Councillor Riley Brockington introduced a motion Wednesday asking council to approve the name change, although a replacement name has not been announced.
Ottawa clearly has a soft spot for New York City. Trump Avenue is but one of many streets in the aptly named Central Park neighbourhood that pay homage to the Big Apple, alongside Madison Park, Manhattan Crescent, and Staten Street.
The motion to rebrand Trump Avenue comes just weeks after Trump signed an executive order seeking to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” — a name that, unsurprisingly, hasn’t exactly caught on everywhere.
Major companies like MapQuest, for instance, have refused to adopt the new name and subsequently saw a surge in app downloads last week as a result.
According to reports, City Council is expected to vote on Brockington’s motion at its next meeting, currently scheduled for Sept. 23.
If the motion gets approved, Brockington said he would lead a public consultation process and let local residents weigh in on what the street should be called instead.
In the meantime, people on Reddit have plenty of ideas for a new name.
“Change it to Obama Avenue and watch the tantrum,” one user wrote.
Another Redditor threw in a Canadian hero’s name in the hat: “Terry Fox Drive if there isn’t already one.”
Meanwhile, someone else commented that “would be nice to call it Lake Ontario Drive” to keep the momentum going.
“Change it to Tragically Hip Street,” wrote one user, referring to one of the most influential bands in Canadian history.
