These are the trending hobbies Canadians might want to take up this fall

If you’re tired of binge-watching the same comfort shows on Netflix or doom-scrolling TikTok every night, it might be time to pick up a new hobby.

Pinterest’s Fall 2026 Trend Report points to a growing appetite for more hands-on, offline activities as young individuals look for ways to reduce screentime or unplug completely.

The platform is known for its seasonal trend reports, which often influence everything from food and fashion to beauty and home decor. Pinterest predicts a shift toward more tactile, unplugged hobbies as summer winds down.

And Canadians seem eager to get crafty. Pinterest says eight in 10 users feel the platform encourages them to try something new offline, while 51 per cent of Gen Z say having a hobby contributes to their overall happiness.

So, what’s worth trying this fall? Here are some trending hobbies you can get into:

Crafts

Ready to put your fingers to work? Searches for hand embroidery art have skyrocketed by an astounding 1,351 per cent, making it one of the platform’s biggest craft trends.

If you’ve always been curious about pottery but don’t know where to begin, start small. Searches for easy air-dry clay crafts, which don’t require a big ol’ kiln, are up 624 per cent. You can spend time making magnets, small whimsical figurines, or little trinket dishes to store jewelry from the comfort of your own home.

On a related note, Pinterest predicts goth pottery will be having a major moment this fall, with searches for this art form already up 479 per cent. Think handmade ceramics shaped like skulls, gargoyles and other spooky creatures, all in moody shades of black, brown and deep purple.

If you’d rather pick up a paintbrush, why not try watercolour painting? Searches for mini watercolour painting have jumped 238 per cent. It’s a low-commitment hobby that requires nothing but a brush, a few colours, and some scraps of paper, making it perfect for a quiet afternoon at home.

Kitchen DIYs

If the kitchen is your favourite place to get a little “me time,” there are plenty of hobbies to try that can make you feel like you’re channeling your inner Sandra or Nicole from Practical Magic.

Pinterest says searches for herbal apothecary have climbed 595 per cent, so now’s your opportunity to jump on the bandwagon and make your own plant-based remedies, a fragrant sachet with lavender and rosemary, or even something super simple like homemade herbal tea blends.

In addition, searches for homemade spice blends are up 209 per cent this season, so you can try mixing your own signature blend for dinner.

Candle-making tutorials are also up 118 per cent, so instead of shelling out $30 for a premade candle, you can save some money and take pride in learning to make your own from scratch.

A particularly niche hobby catching fire right now is Kombucha scoby recipes, with searches up 201 per cent. Scoby stands for “symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast,” which is what helps sweetened tea ferment into kombucha. In other words, you can learn to brew your own batch at home instead of reaching for an expensive store-bought bottle.

And for anyone hoping to waste less, Pinterest says searches for how to make beeswax wraps have jumped 250 per cent. The reusable wraps are a simple swap for plastic wrap, not to mention a handy little DIY project.

Astrology

Astrology has been having a moment for years, but Pinterest says more and more folks are keen to discover the basics, with searches for learn astrology up an impressive 733 per cent.

Searches for crystals and meanings have risen 606 per cent, while tarot cards for beginners, a special set of cards used in fortune-telling, are up 558 per cent. If you want to be double crafty, feel free to design your own once you’re comfortable using them.

Now for the really niche stuff: Ketu astrology is also on the rise, with searches up 329 per cent. Ketu is the lunar south node, often linked to spirituality, detachment and personal growth. It’s also thought to represent the things we’re ready to let go of, making it an interesting rabbit hole for anyone curious about their spiritual side.

Interest in moon water rituals has climbed 186 per cent, too. The practice involves leaving water under the light of the moon — typically during a full moon — before using it in spiritual rituals or personal practices.

And while it’s not quite as popular, searches for how to make crystals at home have still jumped 68 per cent, according to Pinterest. Crystals like amethyst are known to help reduce stress and anxiety while citrine is widely used to help bring prosperity to one’s life.

Gardening

No longer a hobby synonymous with summer, gardening is shaping up to be an “it” hobby for fall, too. Pinterest says “backyard botanist” will reign supreme next season as young folks look to spend more time in nature.

There’s growing interest in dried and pressed flowers, with searches up 457 per cent this year. September and October are prime time for taking in fall foliage, so next time you’re out on a hike, bring a bag or basket to collect fallen leaves and flowers to decorate your home with.

Or why not make your own basket? Searches for foraging baskets are up 107 per cent, and you can make a simple one using materials like willow branches or other flexible twigs woven together into a sturdy enough basket.

Vertical gardening is trending, too, with searches up 82 per cent. It’s essentially growing plants upward using shelves, trellises, wall planters, or hanging pots instead of spreading them across the ground, making it a great option for those living in tiny condos.
