A potential safety risk has prompted Canada to warn travellers in its recent travel advisory update for the U.K.

The statement urges Canadians to “exercise a high degree of caution” when travelling to the U.K. On Tuesday, the Government of Canada warned Canadians of a threat of terrorism in Europe.

“Terrorists have carried out attacks in several European cities,” reads the statement. “In the United Kingdom, previous attacks have resulted in casualties. They have included random violent incidents in public areas, such as knife and vehicle attacks, as well as explosions.”

Although most incidents occurred in London, they have also happened elsewhere.

According to the Security Service (MI5) and the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC), the U.K. uses a five-level threat scale. It has recently raised its threat level to four, meaning that the risk is “severe” and that an attack is highly likely in the next six months. Threat levels are assessed based on available intelligence, terrorist capability, terrorist intentions, and timescale.

The Home Office said that it increased the threat level to severe after two men were injured in a stabbing in the Golders Green suburb in Northwest London on April 29. However, it stated that the threat level in the U.K. has been rising for some time due to “an increase in the broader Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorist threat from individuals and small groups based in the U.K.”

The last time the threat level in the U.K. was severe was in November 2021, following the Liverpool Women’s Hospital bombing and killing of the politician Sir David Amess.

The Canadian government warns that potential targets could include government buildings such as schools, places of worship, airports and other transportation hubs and networks, as well as public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels, and other locations visited by foreigners.

Tourists should be aware of their surroundings and be vigilant when attending sporting events, religious holidays, public celebrations, and major political events such as elections.
