Canada issues new travel advisory update for Hawaii
Planning a trip to Hawaii? Canadians should take note of the latest travel advisory update before flying out.
On Monday, the Government of Canada updated its United States travel advisory, warning travellers heading to Hawaii of Hurricane Lowell.
“Hurricane Lowell could pass through Kauai County, including the Islands of Kauai and Niihau and the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Nihoa to French Frigate Shoals between Sept. 7 and 8, 2026,” reads the statement. “The storm is likely to bring excessive rainfall and violent winds.”

Tourists are being warned of possible flash flooding and landslides that could affect access to transportation, power distribution, water and food supply, telecommunications networks, emergency services, and medical care.
Canadians who are already in the area are urged to be careful and monitor local news and weather reports. The government also advises travellers to follow local authorities’ instructions, including evacuation orders, and to contact their airline for the latest information about their flights.
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency states that Hurricane Lowell passed west of Niihau and Kauai on Monday as a category two hurricane, causing power outages in Kauai County and on Oahu.
Dangerous winds are expected to continue until Tuesday, along with the possibility of heavy rain, flash floods, landslides, and extreme surf, as well as possible tornadoes in Kauai County.

In a video shared on social media, Hawaii Governor Josh Green said that schools, as well as state and county offices in affected areas, will be closed until Tuesday “under an abundance of caution.”
“I’m worried about these winds and the debris that they’re going to leave; there will be landslides where there’s extra flooding, that’s been kind of our greatest concern,” he shared.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Centre, the hurricane is quickly weakening and could be “close to becoming a post-tropical cyclone on Friday.” However, there’s a risk that it could restrengthen over the weekend.
