Canada issues serious travel advisories for Thailand and Cambodia

Rising political unrest in parts of Thailand and Cambodia has prompted the Canadian government to update its travel advisory.
On July 23, the government issued a new advisory urging Canadians to stay vigilant when travelling to some areas of Thailand.
“Exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand due to ongoing political tensions and sporadic demonstrations in Bangkok and elsewhere in the country,” warns the advisory.
The update warns Canadians of regional risks in certain southern provinces due to “the unpredictable security situation.” As a result, travellers are urged to avoid Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla, and Yala, where separatist insurgents have perpetrated criminally and politically motivated attacks.

“These deadly attacks include shootings, bombings, and arson, and are usually directed at military, government, and security buildings and personnel,” reads the advisory.”They have also occurred in a variety of public places.”
Martial law and extra security measures are currently in place in these areas. The statement warns that these groups may also target popular tourist areas throughout Thailand.
“You risk becoming a collateral victim of an attack if you travel in these provinces,” reads the statement.
The government is also warning Canadians of potential risks even in Bangkok.
“Political instability in Thailand has created a volatile and unpredictable security environment throughout the country, particularly in Bangkok,” stated the advisory.
Thailand also has an ongoing threat of terrorism, with authorities defusing bombs found in Phuket, Krabi, and Phang Nga in June 2025.
There’s also escalating conflict in other parts of the country.

On June 26, Canada updated its travel advisory for Cambodia, warning travellers of the ongoing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. Tensions in the region have led to violence and heightened military presence. On Thursday, The Guardian reported that Thailand shut down all border checkpoints to Cambodia due to escalating tension and violence between the two countries.
Canada also recently issued an advisory for the Philippines due to a major typhoon that’s set to make landfall.
