Why doesn’t Sandwich Town Ontario have a sandwich shop?
In Windsor, Ontario, lies a truly iconic neighbourhood called Sandwich Town. Established in 1797, Sandwich Town is considered one of the oldest, most significant settlements in Ontario and is known for its historic buildings and monuments. But do you know what it isn’t known for? Actual sandwiches.
That’s right. Despite its name, Sandwich Town does not have a single sandwich shop. How could this be? We decided to investigate further.
The Sandwich Town problem

The discovery first gained attention when a passionate Windsor resident raised the concern during a recent town hall-style video in collaboration with Subway, asking one very fair question: “How can a place called Sandwich Town not have a single sandwich shop?”
His plea over the unfairness of the situation put a spotlight on what might be Canada’s most unexpected sandwich problem.
The community rallied around the issue, highlighting the fact that a Subway restaurant sat a mere 50 feet away, just outside Sandwich Town’s boundary lines.
With local support, Subway stepped in with a solution, working with the Sandwich Town BIA to propose moving the boundary lines by a couple of Footlongs and officially welcoming the nearby restaurant into Sandwich Town.
