Filipino Canadians call for support after typhoons devastate Philippines
The Philippines is reeling after being hit with back-to-back typhoons.
Just five days after being battered by Typhoon Kalmaegi this month, the Philippines was then hit by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, locally known as Uwan.
The Government of Canada issued a travel advisory on Nov. 7, advising Canadians to “exercise a high degree of caution” when travelling to the Philippines as Typhoon Fung-wong made landfall.
The super typhoon blew through northwestern Philippines, leaving a path of destruction, including landslides, floods, and shutting down power in entire provinces. It has killed at least 10 people and displaced more than 1.4 million.

It’s the 21st tropical cyclone that has hit the Philippines this year, and comes just two months after mass protests in the country against alleged corruption surrounding flood control projects.
With an estimated one million Filipinos living in Canada, many have family back home who have been impacted by the relentless extreme weather.
Filipino Canadian organizations are calling for help. Here are organizations and direct mutual aid channels you can donate to to support families affected by Typhoon Kalmaegi and Super Typhoon Fung-wong.
Pinay Collection
The Filipino apparel brand based in Canada and the Philippines will be donating 15 to 100 per cent of proceeds from its merchandise to typhoon relief channels.
The organization also shared a list of people-led, mutual aid funds that people can directly donate to.
“For families who have lost homes, crops, and loved ones, there is no pause between disasters. And behind every storm, we see the same pattern: corruption, plunder, and profit come first. The people come last,” Pinay Collection stated on Instagram.

These Filipino advocacy groups are running a fundraising drive for Filipinos impacted by the typhoons.
“The funds raised go towards supplies and supporting people’s organizations coordinating relief efforts,” reads an Instagram post.
Canadians can donate via e-transfer to migrantecanada@gmail.com and add the note “SAGIP MIGRANTE.”

The disaster relief humanitarian organization’s Philippines chapter has put out an urgent call for donations.
“The Philippine Red Cross is on the ground — rescuing, feeding, and sheltering those affected. But we can’t do it alone,” reads the site. “Your kindness can be someone’s lifeline. A warm meal. Household essentials. Basic medicines. A safe place to sleep.”
